Dressed for Success - How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Shoot

Family Photographs are treasured forever. These images will be left as a legacy, when your children are grown, with families of their own some day. To get the most from your family portraits, here are a few tips to consider Before your session.

Start your wardrobe planning with a look to the Season and weather. It's worth considering that comfortable people tend to look better in Photographs, especially children. So layer up, in cooler weather.

Next, consider the style of look you are going for. If you are aiming for a soft, elegant and timeless look, chose neutral colours with soft flowing fabrics, such as creams, oatmeal, light browns, very soft pastels, tans, greys and slate blues.

The colour palette for this image is cream with a pop of colour, introduced with the red dress along with the green background.

You can introduce stronger colours by matching your outfits to a colour palette, which can be fun and brings out everyone's individuality. Pick 2 - 3 colours everybody can match to, but avoid wearing all the same colour. In the image below, the colour choice was yellow, navy & grey.

Left you will find a few ideas on colour palettes, which highlight complimentary colours.

Solid colours look better in a photo, as opposed to loud patterns. Textures in clothing will add depth and interest to photographs. Accessories can also be used to add a pop of colour.

Stay clear from distractions such as cartoon characters or words on clothing. Simple, classic style clothes create family portraits which will not date and look good over many years to come.

Finally be well rested & well fed ahead of the session, which works well for adults as well as children :-)
